AML self-regulatory organisation membership in Switzerland
Swiss financial intermediaries that are not otherwise licensed, including many payment and crypto businesses, must join an anti-money laundering self-regulatory organisation recognised by FINMA. The SRO, not FINMA, then supervises their AML compliance. A pending reform of the Financial Institutions Act proposes new licences for crypto-institutions and payment instrument institutions, which could move some of these firms into full FINMA licensing.

Questions we get
Can we choose direct FINMA AML supervision instead of an SRO?
No. Professional financial intermediaries under Art. 2 para. 3 AMLA must join a recognised SRO. Firms that need a FINMA licence for their activity, such as a fintech licence, are supervised by FINMA under that licence.
How does the FinIA reform affect us?
It proposes new licences for crypto-institutions and payment instrument institutions. The consultation closed on 6 February 2026 and the law is not yet in force, so plan for SRO membership now and watch for transitional rules.
